Seven held and dispersal powers after disturbances

Seven people have been arrested and a dispersal order is in place after two violent disturbances in Rotherham, police said.

Officers were called to the Ferham Park Avenue area following reports of disorder just after 15:30 BST on Tuesday, and returned to the same road after a reports a man was slashed at 22:30 BST.

Seven people were held on suspicion of offences including assault causing grievous bodily harm, assault of an emergency worker and possession of an offensive weapon.

A Section 35 order, giving officers powers to disperse people from an area to minimise crime, has been imposed until 11:44 BST on Friday.

Policed received reports of the first disturbance at 15:37 BST and four people were detained.

Three people also received minor injuries.

A 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm and remains in custody.

A 46-year-old was arrested on suspicion of affray and remains in custody.

A 25-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and has been bailed pending further inquiries.

A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence and has also been bailed pending further inquiries.

'Heightened police presence'

Officers later responded to reports a man had suffered a slash wound. He remains in hospital.

A 43-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm, affray and possessing a bladed article.

A 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon.

A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker.

All three remain in custody.

Ch Insp James Bennett of South Yorkshire Police said: "There will be a heightened police presence in the area today, with local neighbourhood officers conducting proactive high-visibility patrols."
